Positive Labour and Birth Workshop

A highly informative workshop covering important and helpful topics about labour and birth. Having a better understanding of the process can help you feel prepared, promote a positive experience, and understand when to seek further support. 
The labour and birth workshop will cover the anatomy and physiology of labour and birth, how to promote a positive outcome and experience. We learn about alternating positions and how to work with your body’s rhythm and knowledge.

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Anatomy and physiology, including what is assessed during labour and how
  • Baby’s journey, including options for monitoring baby’s heartbeat, first breath and optimal cord clamping
  • Place of birth, and what it means to you
  • Types of birth and what may reduce the chances of spontaneous vaginal birth
  • Signs of labour, including what to do and who and when to call
  • Commonly used pain relief options
  • Alternative pain relief options
  • Labour and birth positions
  • Causes for concern
  • Induction of labour and what happens, including risks and benefits
  • Stages of labour and birthing the placenta
  • Emergencies, what they are and what happens
  • Safe skin to skin
  • Strategies to reduce the risk of perineal trauma
  • Perineal assessment and repair, including grades of tears and episiotomy

You will receive a useful and comprehensive information pack to take home and refer back to. You will also be be provided with notebooks and pens to take your own notes during the class.

Give Birth without Fear Workshop

Give Birth Without Fear is a technique developed in Sweden by Susanna Heli. This technique is different to hypnobirthing as it uses physiological tools and strategies suitable for any type of birth.

Understanding fear and recognising what it does to your body and mind is useful for any unfamiliar or challenging experience in life. The teaching and strategies of Give Birth Without Fear offers you the opportunity to feel in control and excited about birth.

You will learn how to recognise fear is influencing your labour progress, and have better control over the nervous system to prevent fear prolonging or delaying birth. 

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How this method works for all types of births or challenges
  • The 4 tools
  • The involvement of hormones in labour and birth
  • The function of fear on the nervous system
  • How fear can impact the length of labour
  • How interventions are linked to unmanaged fear
  • How the birthing partner can support every step of the way
  • Practice the tools with your partner
  • Contraction rhythm and how to work with the rhythm
  • Overcoming obstacles including induction of labour, opiates and epidural

You will receive a useful and comprehensive information pack to take home and refer back to. This is  a highly interactive workshop. You will also be be provided with notebooks and pens to take your own notes during the workshop.

New Baby Workshop

The new baby workshop is a comprehensive workshop created to support new parents to prepare and feel confident to care for a new baby. This workshop will help parents understand the essential physiological adaptations of a new baby, and a holistic guide to caring for baby’s physical and emotional needs. 

This workshop is all about your baby. The transition to life outside the uterus is an amazing physiological miracle. The aim of this workshop is for parents to understand this process and support baby to have an easier and healthier transition. The stages covered include how you and baby will feel immediately post birth, the first 24hrs and the first 28 days of life.

The New Baby workshop will offer important information about how to recognise effective feeding, caring for baby’s skin, recognising healthy behaviours or causes for concern, and preventing complications.

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • What happens immediately post birth including scoring, monitoring and top to toe checks
  • The first 24 hours including referrals, screening and wet and dirty nappies
  • The first 28 days including early development and registration
  • When and how to seek advice
  • Sleep deprivation and getting to know each other
  • Skin care including nappy changing. eyes, mouth and cord care
  • All about jaundice, what is normal and what needs treatment
  • Neonatal unit admission and how to support your baby’s recovery
  • Sleep safety
  • What to look out for, including infection
  • What happens when you go home, including community midwife visits and further screening

Breastfeeding Workshop

The Breastfeeding workshop is packed with everything you need to know to enjoy feeding your new baby. This practical session offers the opportunity to practice positioning your baby to achieve an effective latch and learn how to hand express. 

This workshop offers important information and practical tips to successfully breastfeed your baby, feel confident to recognise effective feeding, and avoid common breastfeeding complications. 

During the workshop, you will receive information about the value of colostrum, exclusive breastfeeding and making a connection with your baby. The importance and benefits of protecting the magic hour following birth and skin to skin is explained. You will receive advice about positions to hold baby for effective attachment, and videos to explain how breastfeeding works.

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Colostrum, what its purpose is, and how to harvest from 37 weeks (equipment provided)
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Effective positions and attachment
  • The role of hormones and how they effect brain development
  • Skin to skin contact
  • Baby’s instinctive behaviour including feeding cues
  • Recognising effective attachment
  • Expressing breast milk (pumping)
  • How to safely store breastmilk
  • ‘Seeing’ what baby is getting
  • Tongue tie including what it is, problems it can cause and what can be done
  • Practice breastfeeding positions with dolls and knitted breasts.

You will receive a useful and comprehensive information booklet to take home and refer back to. This is a highly interactive workshop.

  • The Infant Feeding workshop is delivered by a lactation consultant and lead tongue tie practitioner
  • The length of this workshop is 4.5 hrs*.
