Packing your hospital bag is an exciting time (also a little nerve racking too!) and we want to make sure you have everything ready and at hand. We have put together a list of everything you should need to help you get through the birth of your new baby. We recommend you pack you bag at least 3 weeks before your due date as some babies like to make an earlier appearance.
- Birth plan and maternity notes
- Any Medicines you’re taking
- Several nightdresses or t-shirts (Open-fronted nightie – suitable for breastfeeding)
- Slippers or socks
- A dressing gown
- Lip balm
- Water spray or mini fan
- Snacks, snacks and more snacks
- Isotonic drinks – to keep your energy levels
- Favourite music, book or magazine
- Hair clips, bobbles and a brush
- Tissues or wet wipes
- Your mobile phone (and a charger!)
- Nursing bras – two or three
- Breast pads – just in case you have any leaks!
- Maternity pads – at least two packs
- Big, comfy knickers – i’m talking bigger than Bridget’s -( these may be you new favourite underwear for a little while)
- Laundry bag – to pop in any used clothing and keep separate from your clean clothes
- Toiletries – wash items, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant
- Baby clothes – Baby grows, scratch mitts, socks, Baby blanket
- Muslins cloths and bibs – useful for mop ups
- Nappies, baby toiletries and cotton wool
- Sterilised baby bottles and Baby milk/ formula
- Going-home clothes for you - loose & comfortable
- Baby blanket /shawl – for when you go home
- Baby car seat – essential if you are driving home after the birth
- Loose change for car park/ vending machine
It’s a great idea to go through your hospital bag with your birthing partner just so they know where to find items when they are needed.
